First things first. If you have already read the white paper on CODEC and know what it is all about and want your institution join, it's very easy. Send an email to LaVonne Molde, Director of Membership Services for CALI at firstname.lastname@example.org and she will send you an invoice for CODEC.
CODEC dues are $2000 per institution for a three year subscription (until 12/31/2004) or $1000 per institution for a one year subscription.
If you are outside the United States, joining CODEC includes an affiliate membership with CALI. That is, you gain access to all of CALI's materials, discounts to the annual Conference for Law School Computing and other services and products that CALI has to offer.
Why Should My Law School Join CODEC? Simply stated, the goal of CODEC is to reduce the barriers to entry for law schools interested in distance legal education. CODEC is a bundle of services and products that not all law schools may not be interested in, so we decided to create a consortium within the consortium to fund these activities. Right now, we are looking at a three-year horizon for getting the major services launched which include...
- Training for faculty in creation of distance learning law courses
- Web-based services to help law schools find partners for different models of course-sharing, team-teaching, course-swapping, etc.
- Directories of facilities, academmic calendars and local grading policies to help law schools coordinate when offering courses, >/li>
- Articles about case studies, best practices and resources relating to DLE (distance legal education).
By concentrating these activities in one, centralized, neutral entity - CALI - that is governed by it's membership of law schools, we believe that we can improve administrative and bureaucratic efficiency to make the exploration of distance legal education more successful. The recent promulgation of the new ABA standards relating to distance legal education make this an ideal time to launch this project.
